Car Door Locks

Like the locks on our home’s doors, most of us don’t really think much about the locks on our car doors. If you have a keyless entry system, chances are that you think very little about the locks. However, you do need to give them a little bit of attention every now and then in order to keep them in good working condition. What should you do?

Lubrication Is Important

Perhaps the single most important thing to do for any car door lock is to lubricate it. You can use a spray lubricant (with a straw) to squirt a tiny amount of lubrication into the exterior of the lock. Then, insert your key and turn the lock back and forth. However, that’s not the only thing you need to do. You can also use powdered graphite here.

Open your car door so that you can see the latch itself. This entire assembly should be lubricated. While WD-40 or a similar lube is fine for the lock, you need to first wipe away the grease and dirt with a clean rag. Once that’s done, you can lubricate the latch with a spray lubricant, followed by a squirt of white lithium grease.

To keep your doors opening smoothly and quietly, it’s also recommended that your use lithium grease to lubricate the door hinges, which you’ll find at the far forward position, and accessible from the interior of the car.

That’s really all there is to caring for your car door locks. Keep them lubricated and clean, and you’ll find that they last you for many years. Of course, if you lose your key, the key breaks in the lock, or the lock won’t work for some reason, having the name and phone number of a trusted auto locksmith is important.
