Now, let’s take a minute to talk about some of the most common issues related to house lock and key services, including the locksmithing solutions that we provide.
The Most Common FAQs about House Lock and Key Services
Who sells smart locks?
Some locksmiths and locksmithing services also take it upon themselves to sell the hardware that they install. However, it is far more common for you to find a technician that will make a recommendation about a lock that you can buy at a local hardware store and either charge you for the purchase or have you make the purchase, and then perform the installation. Smart locks will be fairly easy to find in today’s market. Many people are even buying them online to save money and then calling a locksmith to do the work of installing them securely. This is a great way to balance out the expense while still saving money.
How can I make sure I never get locked out?
Unfortunately, even with modern smart locks and digital lock technology, there is not a 100% chance that you can avoid getting locked out of your home. Even the best locks can break or malfunction over time. Therefore, to reduce the risk, you’ll want to make sure that you take care of your locks and give them the maintenance and cleaning that they need. You should also consider having an extra key somewhere (but not in the obvious places) in case you lose or forget yours.
New locks that have digital keypads or that use biometrics to identify people coming and going are a great solution to avoid lockouts—so long as the locks are in working order and properly powered, they will be able to provide access to the home at all times. Whenever you choose what you want to do, let us know and we’ll help you get moving on your security upgrades with new locks and more.
What’s wrong with hiding a key?
Everyone has done this. Some people still do. It’s tempting, after all, to think that you can outsmart the bad guys and hide a key somewhere. Some people even just get complacent about it—they may think, “let them go ahead and get into my house. There’s nothing to steal.”
The reality is that thieves can find more than you think, and even if they don’t, the violation of them being in your home is difficult enough for most. Don’t hide keys in obvious spots, at the very least. You don’t want to just hand it to people. Try to hide keys somewhere only family members can access (i.e., a garage or shed) or leave them with a neighbor for backup.
Some people even get tempted to leave their doors unlocked so that they don’t need a key. It’s inconspicuous enough to leave that side door unlocked, right? It’s not like anyone will know. At least, you hope they won’t. But what you’re not thinking about is how many people break into homes simply by checking the doors to see if they’re open.
If you leave even one door or window unlocked, you’re inviting in danger. And, it’s also going to make it more difficult for you to prove breaking and entering to the insurance company when there’s not any “breaking”.
Do locksmiths help with regular lock services?
Although it’s less common, yes, locksmiths can provide an array of scheduled appointments and maintenance services that assist with all kinds of lock and key situations. We are available for emergencies, but we can also schedule for things like lock upgrades, rekeying after a sale, etc. If it has to do with locks and keys, we can probably take care of it. And, we’ll explain all of the options to you along the way so that you know what you’re getting into.
We can also assist with vehicle locks and other lock and key needs beyond your home, so be sure to inquire about all that we can do. If you’re currently dealing with a lock emergency, don’t do anything until you call us and let us assess the situation to get the best solution.
What about calling the cops?
A lot of times, people automatically think to call the police to assist when they’re locked out of their home or vehicle. While this is an effective choice, it can also be a misuse of resources if there’s no real emergency. Being locked out, in and of itself, isn’t a reason to call the cops. If you are also in danger because you’re locked out, that’s another story. Perhaps it’s really hot or really cold outside and you’re concerned about safety—that’s also a valid choice.
However, in most instances, people who called the police could’ve just as easily called a locksmith for the solutions that they need. Take the time to assess the situation and feel free to call a locksmith and ask what they recommend. The best ones will tell you that they’re ready to help and the cops are better left for situations where people may need assistance and additional protection or safety, and not just help with their locks and keys. Also keep in mind that police may damage your locks and will not be responsible for the repairs.
There’s a lot that you can gain from professional locksmiths when it comes to your house lock and key needs. Keep these things in mind and when you need a locksmith that you can rely on, call the professionals at Mobile Locksmiths Indianapolis.
