3 Tips for Door Lock Maintenance
We often take our door locks for granted. You insert your key, or turn the knob, and they’re secure. That’s all there is to it, right? Actually, while there is not a lot of TLC needed with door locks, there are a few things you need to do in the way of door lock maintenance to make sure that they stand the test of time. Here are three important tips to follow.
1. Lubricate Regularly:
One of the most important things to do in the way of door lock maintenance is to lubricate them regularly. Ideally, you’ll do this at least once per year. A little WD-40 or a similar lubricant is more than enough. Just give the lock a brief squirt, and then run the key in and turn the lock back and forth. That’s it.
2. Check the Door:
Another important part of door lock maintenance is to make sure that your doors remain hung at the right angle. Over time, homes can settle on the foundation, and this can throw off the door’s angle. That will make the door latch no longer line up correctly, and could compromise your door lock. To check your door, simply open and close it. If it feels like it’s sticking or binding, there’s an issue. You should see a uniform gap between the door and doorframe all the way around, too.
3. Clean Them:
Your door locks will become dirty over time. Cleaning them isn’t difficult, and won’t take long. A little warm water and a mild dish soap combined with a sponge is all that you’ll need. Don’t overdo it – a harsh cleanser could damage the finish.
There you have them – three important tips to help with door lock maintenance. With a little preparation, your locks will look great and work smoothly for years to come.
