There are many ways for removing broken keys from locks and each one depends on the manner in which the keys are broken. Here are a few steps to help you out:
- If a portion of the key is still sticking out after being broke, you can use a tool such as a set of pliers to pull it out. This method will also require you to press or pull on the door knob with your free hand, while you are still pulling the broken key out. This pulling and pushing of the door knob helps reduce pressure on the lock’s bolting mechanism.
- You can also try using a spare key to push out the broken key. However, if the key broke in between the unlock and lock position, you will have to turn it back into one of the two positions before attempting this removal method.
- If your keys broke in the lock without any parts sticking out, then you will have to use a screwdriver to get it out. A straight blade screwdriver, specifically one that fits into the keyhole must be used. Push or pull the lock to minimize pressure and turn the screwdriver like it was a key to open the door or unlock it. Once the door is unlocked, turn the screwdriver in both directions to see if the door can be locked or unlocked with it.
- You can also try using a powerful magnet to pull out the broken piece partially and then completely remove it by grabbing and jerking it out with a set of pliers.
